Our Approach

Honeycomb Montessori Preschool was founded in 1983 by parents wanting to provide Montessori education for their children. Originally for children between the ages of three and six-years-old, we opened the Honeypot in 1996 to include toddlers from the age of 18 months.

 Our class environments are designed to guide children in explorative learning and creativity. We do not differentiate between ‘play’ and ‘work’. Instead, the two complement each other as your child achieves important developmental milestones.  

We see learning through your child’s eyes. As they choose activities and take part in presentations, we carefully document their progress and interests. A full range of Montessori preschool equipment is available, as well as an extensive library, a myriad of art and craft materials, and a vibrant outdoor learning area.

Starting at Honeycomb

We work with you to ensure a smooth start at Honeycomb. For the first few days we ask parents to be on standby. Some children may need early collection during the first weeks as they adjust to a full day at Honeycomb.

Transition at your child’s pace

Our children learn in multi-age groups, according to interests, abilities and stage of development. Only when your child shows interest in and the ability to move to the next level of development will we guide their transition. Working collaboratively with parents and caregivers enables our teachers or guides to give each child the support they need to meet new challenges.

Our Rainbow of Values

As a vertical age, multi-cultural preschool, our children represent society in miniature. Our ‘rainbow’ code of values fosters cohesion, responsibility, self-direction and acceptance of differences that can last beyond childhood.

The role of the teacher in Montessori education is to guide your child to activities that match their readiness, interests and developmental needs. That's why we call the teacher a ‘directress’ or guide.

Our Directresses hold qualifications recognised by the South African Montessori Association (SAMA) and the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). They are also registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and the South African Council for Educators (SACE)

A Lead Directress holds final responsibility for the class group and may work alongside a Support Directress or Directress-in-training. Emphasis is on working as a team to present, support, observe and assess your child. Directresses are mentored and supported by both the Principal and Vice Principal, who is also a Lead Directress of a class group.

Communication is an important part of the Directresses’ role. They regularly communicate with parents about your child’s needs and progress and are always available for individual consultations upon request.

 
 

Our Parents

Honeycomb has been a parent-led school since its inception. While the preschool is run by the Principal and staff, the Governing Body is chosen from and ratified by our parents at each AGM.

Parents also take a leading role in school events and initiatives. This unique structure gives Honeycomb Montessori Preschool a family feel and allows us to guide your child’s education together. Learn more about the role of our parents here.
